Tohoku University was established in Sendai in 1907 as Tohoku Imperial University by consolidating an agricultural college and a science college. It is the third oldest former Imperial University after Tokyo and Kyoto.

Tohoku University is well known for its open and progressive policies. It was the first Imperial University to admit women and foreign students, and also pioneered in opening a university by offering public lectures. Already in 1911, Tohoku University graduated its first foreign students, thus becoming the Japanese university with the longest history of foreign graduates. All of these were epoch-making events in the history of Japanese higher education. The “Spirit of Open Doors” remains alive within the tradition of Tohoku University. Along with this spirit, the University has placed a high value on the “Spirit of Search for Truth” and emphasized original and creative research. Thus Tohoku University is known for its strong orientation toward academic research.

In the years following its establishment, Tohoku University has grown into an institution that includes the fields of medicine, science, and engineering among others. Currently the University has ten undergraduate and fifteen graduate schools, and five research institutes. The current student body consists of over 17,800 students, including roughly 1,210 international students from 75 countries. The university is staffed with about 5,550 employees, including about 840 full professors.

  • All study abroad participants are required to have a passport prior to any visa deadline dates, and any needed visas prior to departure date (Students are responsible for securing all required travel documents per the host country’s regulations prior to departure).

International students will be enrolled in Tohoku University's Junior Year Program in English (JYPE). All courses in JYPE are conducted in English. Students with sufficient Japanese language skills are also able to take courses in Japanese.

JYPE offers a limited number of courses in English each year. Even if a discipline is listed for Tohoku, that does not ensure that courses in that field would be taught in a particular semester. You must refer to their course listings to see exactly which courses will be offered to exchange students.


Credit for courses taken as a part of exchange programs is received by transferring the credits back to Georgia Tech. The normal course load during the JYPE Program is:
5 credits of Individual Research Training (= 6 GT credits)
4 credits of Japanese Language Courses (= 7 GT credits)
At least two 2-credit Lecture Courses in your field of study (= 1 GT credit per course)

  • You must obtain all proper immigration documents, such as an official passport and a visa if required. Students are responsible for securing all required travel documents per the host country’s regulations. For visa information visit the U.S. State Department website here.
In order to obtain a student visa for study in Japan, you will need to gather several documents and take them to the Japanese Consulate in Atlanta. You should contact the Consulate-General of Japan in Atlanta to obtain information on how to apply for a student visa.

One of the documents you will need to obtain your visa is a Certificate of Eligibility. After receiving your application documents, Tohoku will request a Certificate of Eligibility from the Immigration Office in Tokyo. The Certificate of Eligibility, which takes a several weeks to be prepared, will be sent either to OIE or directly to you.
